Course description
This course is designed for people considering starting the process of setting up housing projects to meet the need of a defined geographic community or a community of interest.
There is growing interest in communities leading on the provision of housing in their locality, particularly affordable housing for local people. There are a variety of ways in which communities can do this: Community Land Trusts; Cohousing; co-operatives; self-build; tenant management. All of these have been encouraged by the Government through the Community Housing Fund and the setting up of Community Led Housing (CLH) Hubs. Announcements are expected on new measures in the coming months.
Devon Communities Together, in partnership with Devon Rural Housing Partnership, is investigating how it might establish a CLH Hub, and this training event is an opportunity to share how that might work, and to establish contact with new communities interested in bringing forward innovative housing projects to meet a local need, and getting initial ideas on what kind of support they might need to achieve their goal.
Learning objectives
- Participants will be introduced to five models of community led housing.
- A summary will be provided of recent policy announcements relating to community led housing.
- Initial ideas will be shared about how a CLH Hub might support local communities in bringing forward housing opportunities.
Your tutor: COLIN SAVAGE
Colin has worked for 14 years as a Rural Housing Enabler in North Devon, West Somerset and Exmoor National Park. This has involved working with local communities and individuals on identifying the need for affordable housing for local community, considering different options for meeting that need, then working with delivery partners to get well over a hundred homes built, with many more in the pipeline. Delivery methods have included partnerships with housing associations and private developers, and supporting individual self-builders in new build and conversions to provide low-cost home ownership. For the past five years Colin has specialised in bringing forward Community Led Housing schemes, and five are actively working towards delivering homes for local people through Community Land Trusts, and other communities are considering this option. Colin is now an Accredited Community Led Housing Adviser.
