Community Spirit Thrives at Baxter Hall in Petrockstowe

In the heart of rural Petrockstowe, Baxter Hall is proving that even the smallest communities can create a big impact when it comes to bringing people together.

With limited access to public service, a common challenge for rural villages, tackling loneliness and isolation is a priority for local residents. Baxter Hall has become a vital hub for connection, offering a wide range of inclusive activities designed to appeal to all ages, from young people to the young at heart.

A highlight of the hall’s regular programme is ‘CLUB78’, held every other Friday evening. This relaxed social gathering invites residents to drop in, enjoy a drink from the licensed bar, play board games or table tennis and simply spend time catching up with neighbours.

There is also a thriving Ladies Social Club, which meets on the second Tuesday of each month offering a varied programme of activities and outings. During the winter months, monthly community coffee mornings provide another welcoming space where visitors can enjoy homemade cake and conversation in a friendly setting.

Weekly clubs continue to attract strong support, including table tennis, a craft club, art group and the popular “Sew Creative” sessions. Beyond organised activities, Baxter Hall is also a sought-after venue for private hire with its spacious hall, fully equipped kitchen, garden and ample parking making it ideal for parties, skittle nights, meetings and seminars.

The hall’s lively calendar reflects the breadth of opportunities available. This week in Village Halls Week, community members can enjoy:

  • Mon 16 March – Table Tennis
  • Tue 17 March – Parish Council Meeting
  • Wed 18 March – Coffee Morning ☕ + Craft Club 🎨
  • Thu 19 March – Art Group
  • Fri 20 March – Youth Club (ages 10–17)

Looking ahead, there is no shortage of events on the horizon, with plans for a Big Breakfast, skittles night, bingo and even a pizza and karaoke evening.

Baxter Hall continues to demonstrate how community-led spaces can play a crucial role in rural life, creating opportunities for connection, creativity and fun whilst ensuring that no one in the village feels left behind.
