Digital Skills in Libraries

1st October 2026 - 31st March 2027

Helping people build confidence in the digital world

Devon Communities Together is delighted to be working in partnership with Libraries Unlimited and Wellmoor to deliver the Digital Skills in Libraries project across Devon.

Libraries have always played an important role within communities, providing welcoming places where people can access information, learn new skills and connect with others. Digital Skills in Libraries builds on that role by offering friendly, practical support to people who would like to feel more confident using technology in their everyday lives.

Digital technology is now part of many aspects of everyday life. From accessing services and managing healthcare to keeping in touch with loved ones and exploring new opportunities, being able to use digital tools confidently can make a real difference.

However, many people still experience barriers to getting online or making full use of technology. For some, it is a lack of confidence. For others, it can be uncertainty about where to start or who to ask for support.

Digital Skills in Libraries aims to help address those barriers by providing patient, practical support that reflects people's individual needs and interests. Rather than a formal course, the project is about helping people build confidence at their own pace and develop the skills that matter most to them.

Whether someone wants help using a smartphone or tablet, accessing online services, keeping in touch with family and friends, staying safe online, managing appointments, or simply gaining confidence with digital devices, the project will provide support in trusted and familiar community spaces.

The project will initially be delivered through libraries in Sidmouth, Cullompton, Ilfracombe and Newton Abbot.

As one of the project's delivery partners, Devon Communities Together will work alongside Libraries Unlimited and Wellmoor to provide digital skills support within participating libraries.

Our role is to help people build confidence, develop practical skills and access the support they need to make the most of digital opportunities. We will work closely with partners to ensure support is welcoming, accessible and responsive to the different goals and experiences that people bring.

The project is informed by the Devon Essential Digital Skills Framework and will support people to develop the knowledge and confidence needed to participate more fully in modern life.

“Libraries are at the heart of many communities across Devon, providing trusted and welcoming spaces where people can connect, learn and access support. Digital Skills in Libraries is a fantastic opportunity to build on that role, helping people develop the confidence and skills they need to participate fully in modern life whilst continuing to strengthen libraries as a cornerstone of community life.”
