Course Description-                                       Course for support workers & Carers

A fun and interactive educational workshop which ‘steers’ participants through the money maze by providing information, tips and tools to enable effective money management and to help build financial resilience. The course is delivered though a series of interactive games and discussions.

This course is for people that support people that experience difficulties with managing their finances.

Aims and Objectives

The Aims of our financial capability courses are to:

  • Provide a variety of tools and information to enable participants to manage their finances more effectively and build financial resilience;
  • Improve participant’s knowledge of the choices they have to deal with day-to-day financial problems and empower them to make better informed decisions about their personal finances;
  • Increase participants’ awareness of where they can access further help/information/guidance regarding their personal finances;
  • Improve understanding of language and “jargon” used in relation to finance, benefits and banking

Course Objectives:

Explain indicators and consequences of ineffective money management;

  • Recognise the pros and cons of different types of money management methods;
  • Explore how to prevent financial crises and recognise how important it is to communicate with creditors and seek help at the earliest opportunity;
  • Identify personal spending priorities;
  • Explain the sanctions available to creditors and what that means in practice;
  • Create a budget and explain potential uses for a deficit or a surplus in this budget;
  • Explore ways to maximise income and make your money go further.

How it works:

Participants work in groups on a monopoly style board; starting with a payment that is equivalent to a month’s worth of income. On the board are various squares containing “priority bills” that must be dealt with. Participants can land on Chance, Post or Emergency squares – these cards contain certain situations which will either benefit the participant’s budget (like a birthday present) or create an additional payment. Discussions are encouraged if participants feel they cannot afford any issues that may arise whilst playing the game. Participants will work towards the Managing the Money Maze Certificate of Attendance. Certain payments, sanctions and options are explored.

About Your Tutor

Kim Payne

My background is in education, specializing in Autism, Learning difficulties and communication and I joined the Wiser£Money team in January looking for a new challenge.

I really believe that this course will benefit so many people. There is no doubt there is a gap in support and information around benefits and debt and money advice, and this course aims to help start to fill that gap. We also have a great deal of fun while we are doing it, which is even better!
