The population is aging and as age is the biggest risk factor for dementia it is no surprise that one in three people born in the UK this year will develop dementia in their lifetime. Whilst the nature of dementia means the requirement of additional support, It is possible for people living with dementia to thrive when both social and physical environments are made accessible. In particular where communities are given the skills to support people to live well with dementia. Isolation and loneliness are on the increase with severe health implications and those living with dementia are at increased risk.
‘Exploring Dementia’ gives individuals, communities and organisations an insight in to the common symptoms experienced by people living with dementia. These fascinating insights enable people to see ways in which they can support people better in their role whether that be as a family member, at work, as am employer or as a citizen of their community. Everyone will interact with someone living with dementia and it is not unusual to feel a little lost in knowing the best way to approach or what to say.
This course will develop empathy and educate individuals on how dementia can impact communication and day to day living. In previous sessions learners have been left feeling confident that they have the skills to create meaningful connections that will make a difference in their community.
Communities are gearing up for supporting a population which will include one million people who will be living with dementia in the UK by 2050. These numbers are challenging. Behind each diagnosis is an individual at risk of loneliness and isolation and there are simple communication tools that can enable conversation and engagement that can combat this head on.
